This was an excellent class and I will be signing up for more classes. Sonny is the best! I went in pot this class as a rookie with very little knowledge and thought I would be way over my head for the instruction. Sonny made the entire session beneficial to me while still engaging those who were far more advanced. I came away with significantly more knowledge and photography awareness than when I first walked into the session. Many thanks for you pr patience, enthusiasm, and encouragement

Sonny's teaching experience comes through very clearly. A discussion rather than a presentation, suitable for every level, and this group covered every level. The best thing to say is that we all left with much better understanding of what DoF is, and how to achieve this in one's photos, and what draws the viewer into the scene. What is the subject, most important aspect, and how to draw the viewer to the subject. Well done. Left with a much better understanding of the subject, and how to put it into poractice

I had a great experience. Learned a lot from the instructor and had a fun time learning new skills. The best part of this experience is I came to learn one skill and left with a deeper understanding of multiple skills. It got me out my comfort zone. Well worth the time.

Sonny was an extremely knowledgeable instructor. I appreciate the way that he began the class by asking the participants what WE wanted to gain from the session, and then geared the class towards our goals. He was open to questions and ensured that we understood his responses. (...and he showed no outward remorse as I continued to fire questions at him 😉). I will complete my "homework" by taking hundreds of photos and applying what I learned. Once I become more comfortable using "manual mode", I'll look into future classes taught by him.

Hello, I’m Sonny. For nearly three decades, I’ve dedicated myself to teaching and mentoring creatives who’ve gone on to thrive in diverse industries—from leading audio at Microsoft and developing games at EA Sports, to creating YouTube personalities and even coaching an athlete who played alongside Sidney Crosby.

In the visual world, my photography background spans touring with bands, documenting post-conflict zones, and capturing the untouched corners of our planet. My primary genre is street photography, and I often blend this with architectural subjects to create layered, story-rich compositions. I hold a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology, and I treat photography not just as image-making, but as a meaningful connection between place, time, and story.

My teaching style is fun, flexible, and focused on discovery. I use everything from antique lenses to toy cameras and modern mirrorless gear to challenge the idea that your tools define your talent. In my workshops, you’ll experiment with techniques that focus on storytelling, rhythm, composition, and emotional truth—no matter the camera in your hand.

In Charleston, I combine my passion for history with creative coaching. This city’s architectural layers offer not just backdrops, but stories—and I’m here to help you see them, frame them, and feel them. Whether we’re walking on ballast stone alleys or photographing ironwork by gaslight, our goal is the same: learn to see beauty...differently.

Let’s unlock the magic of photography—together.

The Blue Angels air show was scheduled for Saturday. I had my camera ready and the batteries fully charged since Friday night. When Saturday morning arrived, however, it was rainy and overcast. Every few hours, I peered out the window, hoping the rain would stop and the sun would break through. But no?the rain was relentless, and the sky only grew gloomier. While keeping an eye on the weather, I monitored the official media channels for updates on whether the show would be called off. I had just returned from a 5 month trip to Kodiak Alaska (to film the bears). My three youngest grand babies live in Mount Pleasant (that is why I am here), so I decided to take my youngest grand daughter out with me for the day. We went to Magnolia Cemetery and there were so many birds. From a very vocal Kingfisher, to Egrets, Herons, Canada Geese, Wood Storks and of course Roseate Spoonbills. I was so happy for her, she was learning how exciting it is to see all these birds. Watch them catch

I have been wanting to photograph this location for a while and needed to scout the location first to see when the best time to photograph the rock and dogs safely. I took my WCS puppy Pixel as she is the best best trained of our three dogs. She is a bit small and dark in colouring for the type of photo's I was after but she did a wonderful job helping me scout the location.
